DESIGN TREND: Out with the Old, In with the Neo

Philippe Starck & Marcel Wanders

Some designers are stemming away from stark-ultra-modernism by bringing new life in to traditional forms. The tension between these reincarnated pieces with the modern spaces they adorn creates a multi-layering effect.

Two major players of this approach are super-star designers Marcel Wanders and Philippe Starck. Miami’s air of glossy modern glam has been a great canvas for these two. Projects such as the Delano Hotel in South Beach, the Icon Brickell and the Mondrian Hotel showcase this playful take on luxury and the new Baroque.

Along with their interiors, Starck and Wanders are most well known for their furniture designs. These objects derive inspiration from diverse sources of fantasy and opulence such as 18th century interiors and Alice in Wonderland.
